Art versus CAD/CAM
Sometimes, like a sculptor, we choose to make a piece of jewellery by carving a wax and casting it. First we design, then we carve, then we cast. Today, "design" has been so over-hyped that navigating a computer program is being called "designing" (CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing). Just as the arts and crafts movement was a response to the industrial age, we are responding to the computer age by promoting both artistic talent and goldsmithing skills. We are not, by any stretch of the imagination, manufacturers.
As technology becomes capable of creating soulless perfection, so we hunger for imperfection – for the intrinsic beauty that bears the imprint of the fallible human hand.
Passion notably transcends the bounds of a soulless technical perfection that is incapable of creativity and can only work within the limited boundaries of a design.
