Urban Myths
18K versus 10K
Mistakenly, some people believe that 10K gold and 14K gold will last longer than 18K gold because they are harder. In fact, 18K gold lasts longer than a lesser karat gold because it is softer! Imagine that you have a block of ice and a block of butter, if you drag a knife across the ice it chips away, much like a "harder" metal will, where as, like butter, 18K gold just folds in on itself. This is why a higher karat gold will last much longer. A 10K gold ring is less than half pure gold, and something stamped 550Pt is just over half platinum in content. This is also why we work primarily in 18K gold and 19K gold, and the platinum we use in our hand made jewellery is 950 platinum. When it comes to certain things, more is better!
