Please explain the concept of recycled and re-refined gold.
Most gold in use today is actually re-refined recycled gold; that is, gold that has been re-refined from gold scrap, gold sweepings, and gold removed from the sludge of workshop drainpipes. About 80 percent of the gold we receive from our refineries is re-refined gold; the remaining 20 percent is newly minted refined gold.
What about using old gold?
We prefer to use re-refined gold over reworking old gold because re-refined gold is denser and of better quality than old gold. It is more challenging to work with old gold due to the uncertainty of its percentage of pure gold to alloy, and not knowing the number of times it may have been reheated and reused. Old gold is often porous, crystallized, and more prone to cracking. Using old gold to make new jewellery may cost more than starting anew using re-refined gold.
