What do I need to know
about gold?
Pure or 24 karat gold is a classic precious metal that is commonly alloyed with either silver, copper, nickel, or a combination of all three, to give it the tensile strength and hardness required to hold a shape or pattern. Gold alloys are produced in proportions of 18, 14, and 10 karat. We do not use 10K gold due to the low proportion of gold to alloy.
Each metal used in a gold alloy imparts a different colour to the final product. Yellow gold is generally an even blend of silver, copper, and nickel. White gold has a higher percentage of nickel, whereas red gold has a greater percentage of copper. We also use some less common alloys. When hand forging with white gold, we use a special 19K white gold alloy. Although it is difficult to work with and is not suitable for casting, it is very white and very strong. We also have a palladium alloy, which is chemically inert, making it the ideal alloy for those customers with an allergy to nickel. As well, its unusual gray colour gives textured rings an antique look. More on Gold...
